The 2018 National Eating Disorders and Obesity Conference will be held at Twin Towns Services Club over 27-28 September.

Joining us at this year’s conference is Mr Steffen Messerschmidt, Director at Total Health ‘from Inside Out’ Pty Ltd who will present on ‘Food, Behaviour and Development: Are We Giving Our Kids the Best Start to Life?’

Abstract: Food, Behaviour and Development: Are we giving our kids the best start to life?

Eating disorders and its outplay comes in many forms and when looking at prevention of eating disorders and obesity we need to look at the way we condition our children with regards to food choices.

We have seen a global increase in consumption of fast food, take away, processed, packaged foods and soft drinks to just name a few.

In the face of a global health crisis, with the dramatic increase of obesity, diabetes, eating disorders, metabolic syndrome, developmental disorders such as ASD, ADHD, and chronic mental and physical diseases, the possibility of endemic addiction to unhealthy foods requires far greater understanding and awareness. Are we are setting up our children to engage in ‘disordered eating’ or to be at risk of developing an eating disorder or early onset of obesity?

In calculating the potential health risks associated with our food consumption, we must consider that our modern ways of eating and food choices impacts on the quality of our health. Food today often comes with little to none of the nutrients, vitamins, minerals, natural fibre and enzymes normally associated with natural food.

The consequent impact on digestive and assimilatory processes is essential to explore, as is the impact on the brain – an organ known to be hypersensitive to blood sugar levels – and its cognitive function.

This presentation will look at emerging research that shows the addictive nature of certain foods and the potential harm to health it poses from childhood into adulthood. It will explore a practical approach to early intervention and prevention of ‘disordered eating’ in childhood that can support the possibility of raising children that can reverse our current trends and high risk of developing eating disorders and obesity.

Key learnings:
1. Perspectives on food choices.
2. Impact of food choices on behaviour and morbidity.
3. Prevention and Early Intervention.
