The 2018 National Eating Disorders and Obesity Conference will be held at Twin Towns Services Club over 27-28 September.
Joining us at this year’s conference as a Keynote Speaker is Mr Chris Thornton, Clinical Director and Principal Clinical Psychologist, The Redleaf Practice, who will present on ‘The Evidence Based Treatment of Eating Disorders. Where are We Now and Where Might We Be Going’.
We are commonly told that the “gold standard” manualised treatment for Bulimia Nervosa is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and for adolescent Anorexia Nervosa is Family Based Treatment. But what if all that glitters is not gold? Outcomes are in reality more limited than we would like to believe.
Successful dissemination of an evidenced based treatment requires a thorough knowledge of both eating disorders and the core principles of the manualised treatment. It is concluded that adherence to the core principles of a good “eating disorders treatment” may enhance outcome rather than an unquestioning adherence to a treatment manual.
Chris Thornton is a Clinical Psychologist and is the Clinical Director of The Redleaf Practice, a multidisciplinary private practice that specialises in the outpatient treatment of eating and related disorders. Chris has 25 years’ experience working on inpatient units, day programs and outpatient services both in Australia and New Zealand. He has been trained by the developers of Family Based Treatment and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – Enhanced. Chris has a commitment to the provision and dissemination of evidence based treatment.
Chris is a past president of the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Eating Disorders. He has presented nationally and internationally and authored numerous scientific papers into the treatment of eating disorders.
